Nuclear Roulette.
So Joker wants to destroy New
York's population by a neutron bomb.
They find the
ship with the rockets by assistance of Major Van Lewton. Powergirl makes Dinah
able to fly (temporarily), so they fly to the boat.
They settle the crew by a little bit scuffles (that's the total action).
But it is too late, the captain has launched the rockets launch, all six
of them, from which is just one the neutron bomb, and nobody knows which. The
Russian roulette is raised slightly higher level version (the title is no
accident). Power Girl settles three missiles (none of neutrons), but there is
still three and Dinah tries unsuccessfully to know from the captain: which is
the real neutron bomb. So the girls are lamenting on the ship while the rain is
pouring. Power Girl tells us, that she was the first partner of Oracle, but she
screwed up something.
(The dramatic moment completely is killed by Butch Guice's "drawing
skills")
Oracle does not give up, she convinces Lewton to alert the fleet. They
manage to destroy two missiles (of course none of them are neutrons), but the
third, the neutron bomb approaches New
York.
Fortunately, Oracle knows what to do.
(This would be much cool that Guice could normally draw)
She uses the death ray satellite weapon which she used against
Koroscovanians too. Of course, this is not simply because the satellite is in
wrong position for directly targeting, but by using another satellite as a
mirror, she is able to hit the missile which drops into the sea before the
coast of New York City.
Unlike the usual, Chuck Dixon has not concluded the story by an action
orgy, but he has tried to increase the tension. Of course, this is only
moderately successful, because it is quite obvious that the last missile is the
nuclear, however you can't find the ridiculous nonsense by which Oracle has
settled the rocket. :)
All in all, it is a grim, tense and dramatic story, which is nicely a
contrast of the previous strident stories. It is interesting that this is the
first story where the girls undertake to rescue, if not the world, but a world
city.
But the new drawing, Butch Guice is a fly in the ointment. Already I have
slandered him in the post, but he does terrible things with the faces. Here's
how Dinah and Powergirl delight in their success, (Guice draws such faces for
everyone in any situation).
This is his best frame:
Update: Now I look at the front page where Powergirl spreads her legs
while a huge phallic thing hits her :)
